Insiders Report Vol. 9 No. 4
Today I am honored and humbled that Speaker Joe Straus appointed me as Speaker Pro Tempore of the Texas House of Representatives. My role in this position is primarily to serve the Speaker as presiding officer of the House in his absence, while also directing the Local and Consent calendar from the Speaker's chair when it is presented on the House floor.
My dear friend and mentor, Former State Representative Tom Uher, previously held this prestigious position. When I entered the House as a freshman, Representative Uher taught me valuable lessons as a leader in the house, and it is an honor to follow in his and other great leaders' footsteps in this role.
Speaker Straus has asked me to support him in unifying the House so that we can represent all Texans that trust us to be their voice in Austin. I do not take this distinguished position and tremendous honor lightly.
I was also appointed chairman of the House Committee on Special Purpose Districts. This committee is important because it gives me the ability to handle issues on local authorities and districts that have a direct impact on Texans' day-to-day lives. Additionally, I specifically requested and was appointed to the House Natural Resources Committee to tackle the water issues faced by Brazoria and Matagorda Counties, as well as the entire State of Texas.
Along with these responsibilities, I remain the Sunset Advisory Commission Chair. I want to thank Speaker Straus for providing me the opportunity to champion cost-cutting reforms that have resulted in millions of dollars in savings to our great state by ensuring that our agencies are operating efficiently and transparently. We're not done working yet, and I look forward to making sure all the great reforms that we worked on during the legislative interim pass the legislature and are signed into law by the Governor.
